PreK and Kindergarten Registration Information - Hampton Roads VA

Information for parents of local PreK and rising Kindergarteners! These are the dates and/or links to the information for your local school registration:

CHESAPEAKE
 
When: Beginning February 24, 2020.
The Chesapeake Preschool Initiative (CPI) is a FREE full-day program for children who will be four years old by September 30th and who live in Chesapeake. Acceptance into the program is not on a first-come, first-served basis, but is determined on eligibility criteria and identified risk factors. Applications are available on the website, and can also be picked up from the Instructional Services Center located at 304 Cedar Road or at any primary or elementary school in Chesapeake. HAMPTON
 
When: Beginning February 24, 2020.
Interested families must call 757-727-2448 to schedule a Pre-K registration appointment. An appointment is needed to register and your child must be present at the time of registration. SY20-21 Students must be four years old on or before September 30, 2020 and selected by the eligibility criteria to participate.
 
When: April 20-24 and April 27-May 1, 2020.
SY20-21 Students must be 5 on or before September 30, 2020. The age requirement for kindergarten entrance in Virginia is that children will have celebrated their fifth birthday by September 30. Upon parent request, any Hampton child who will celebrate his/her fifth birthday in October or November may be eligible to register for kindergarten pending the outcome of an evaluation. This evaluation is administered by the Hampton City Schools Language Arts Department. Parents with children who were born during the months of October or November 2015, can call Virginia Saloka at 727-2130 to schedule an entrance evaluation appointment. Please note that the Language Arts Department will make the final decision regarding the child’s eligibility status.
Where: Your Zoned Elementary School. You can use Zone Finder to locate your child’s zoned elementary school based on your home address.
 
 
NEWPORT NEWS
 
Children who are five by September 30 are eligible to enter kindergarten that school year. Parents of younger children can find resources through the NNPS early childhood program, please call (757) 283-7788, x.12183.
Where: You will need to register your child at the school he or she will attend. To determine which school your child will attend, use the NNPS School Zone Finder. Enter your address, and the finder will provide the names of the schools assigned to each home in the city. You may also call (757) 591-4502 to find out which school serves your neighborhood.
 
 
NORFOLK
 
When: Applications are available in February for the next school year.
Your child must be age 3 or 4 by September 30 of the school year for which you are applying to enroll. The Commonwealth of Virginia sets the criteria for prekindergarten admission based upon pre-determined risk factors that may apply to you, your child, and/or your household. In order for your child to qualify for prekindergarten, you must complete a Family Data Sheet indicating all potential risk factors, and you must be prepared to submit required verification documents. Please submit all inquiries to EARLY LEARNING/TITLE 1, at 628-3944.
 
Students entering Kindergarten must have reached their fifth birthday on or before September 30th of the year in which they enroll (Students turning 5 years old in Oct., Nov., or Dec. may attend kindergarten on a space-available basis.)
Where: Students must register at the school to which they are zoned before beginning classes.
 

PORTSMOUTH
 
When: Dates not yet available.
All participants must be 4 years old on or before September 30, 2020.  The Bright Start Program is made possible through the Virginia Preschool Initiative. It is designed to provide a high quality developmentally appropriate preschool education for the four-year-olds in Portsmouth who meet the established at-risk criteria.  Selection for participation in the program is based on the determination of need detailed by the state and local district.  
 
When: Dates not yet available.
In order to register for Kindergarten, the student must be 5 years old on or before September 30, 2020.
 
 
SUFFOLK
 
When: Tuesday, April 28, 2020.
In order to register for Kindergarten, the student must be 5 years old on or before September 30, 2020. Please register your kindergarten student before August 15 to ensure class placement.
Where: Registration occurs at your zoned school. Please use the School Locator at www.spsk12.net to find out which school your child should attend.
 

VIRGINIA BEACH
 
Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) offers kindergarten classes for children who will be 5-years-old on or before September 30 of the upcoming school year. Students attend the neighborhood elementary school assigned to their attendance zone.
 
Virginia Beach City Public Schools offers a Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) program to children with the greatest need at many elementary schools. Pre-Kindergarten is a full-day program that follows the VBCPS school calendar and school hours. The Pre-K program provides children with purposeful learning experiences to prepare them for a successful transition to kindergarten while also creating a strong educational foundation. Through implementation of a developmentally-appropriate, hands-on curriculum, students will be engaged in learning literacy with a focus on phonemic awareness, language enrichment, letters/sounds, decoding and beginning reading and writing; numeracy with a focus on numbers and number sense; and social/emotional development. The program develops students’ communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills and integrates technology to support learning.
 
 
 
YORK COUNTY/YORKTOWN
 
Students entering kindergarten must have reached their 5th birthday on or before September 30th of the year in which they enroll. The online Student Information Pre-Registration form is designed to provide a convenient way for parents/guardians to pre-register their child for school in the York County School Division. Please follow the steps below to pre-register your child:
  • Step 1: Create an account with a username and password
  • Step 2: Log in with the username and password you created
  • Step 3: Select to submit a new student or select to edit a child that was previously submitted/saved
  • Step 4: Print out your receipt of the pre-registration for the child/children
  • Step 5: Deliver required documentation, as outlined below, to the school the child is zoned for.
Please call to make an appointment with the school the child is enrolling in to complete the registration process
Where: Online, however appointment is required at the school they are zoned to attend to complete the registration process. School locations and hours may be found on each school’s website.
